i did say last year that gwyneth’s red carpet style is somewhat of a hit-and-miss for me. this year, she’s my absolute favorite. i like it when i don’t have to toss a coin to determine who i think is best dressed.

just like this time last year, i’ve been too disenchanted to write timely posts about red carpet events. therefore the critics choice awards, people’s choice awards and the golden globes have all come and gone without a trace in my inspiration reserve. i think it also didn’t help that i found the fashion a little underwhelming with a glimmer of hope from emma stone’s tux-inspired gucci ensemble and angelina jolie in atelier versace + brad pitt with a cane. someone tell me please who brad was wearing. angie’s dress is officially a candidate for my favorite dress of the year. as if my opinion matters. but that’s besides the point.
so i have decided to just write about the first thing that came to my mind as i was aimlessly looking at the red carpet arrivals: ladies are still wearing calvin klein with the following details:
is this the look of the decade?
this semi-neglected blog deserves a post with more thought, but these days i’m feeling a little mentally weary. too lazy to even choose which dress i like best in the 63rd emmy awards, a task i used to relish with a glutton’s appetite. besides, the internet connection keeps dipping in and out of its world cup rugby stupor today… could it be the countrymen are clogging cyberspace with emotional remarks after the flying fijians lost to the manu samoa? i was just thinking.
not that the emmys lacked in interesting dress choices. like last year’s underwhelming red carpet arrivals (and i’m talking about all the major awards shows last year), where after the twelfth column dress, i wanted to float uselessly in mid-air like grey sediment. i have to say, this year’s emmy red carpet was a spectacle to feed the part of your soul that’s dipped in glitter.
and because too many beautiful dresses require too many editing, i’m glad pop sugar’s glamorous spawn, fab sugar, decided to make the general public do the hard thinking for them. i mean what can be more fun for ordinary people than judging these beautiful celebrities to determine which of them is the most beautiful? hooray for democracy!
it’s easy. just click on your favorite look in each match-up, go through all six rounds until the pool of sixty-four dresses is narrowed down to your one most favorite red carpet look. at the end, the winningest dresses are ranked one to ten.
fun, right? go, click this now!
feeling lost amidst tulle, chiffon, taffeta and organza? here’s a little guide on the silhouettes typically applied to gowns and formal dresses.
literally “hundreds of designers, thousands of clothes”, the philippine fashion week lived up to its claim with the holiday collections this year.
the second of two fashion weeks annually, the holiday collections feature the ethereal, the outstandingly beautiful, the outfits so luxurious they take your breath away.
as jill looked up wedding songs and discussed wedding themes, i can’t help but imagine what songs and what theme i would have selected if my husband and i had a traditional wedding ourselves.
my husband and i both love music. and love it a lot. while we may not entirely agree on many songs, there is one genre and era that brings us together: motown.
i have noticed that many of my favorite red carpet dresses are from atelier versace (like demi moore and elizabeth banks in the oscars, drew barrymore in the golden globes, marisa tomei last year, penelope cruz the other year… there’s too many, i have to stop here otherwise i won’t shut up), so seeing their lookbook every season is quite exciting.
atelier versace has posted the spring 2010 lookbook. which of these dresses do you think will translate well on the red carpet? who do you think can wear them?
it’s been a week since my little blog was thrown in as “collateral damage”. after a few days of confusion and frustration, i finally got my own domain. and i finally get to publish the post that’s been waiting patiently in the drafts folder since the academy awards concluded last week.
i am not jinxed after all… after the two american idol male contestants and the cool girl i’ve been rooting for failed to get past top 24 and top 20, i considered the idea that i might have jinxed them. but after my hopes from another entry were realized in this year’s academy awards, i knew superstition doesn’t live here.
congratulations to kathryn bigelow, the first woman to win best director!
avatar didn’t pull another titanic on us. congratulations to the hurt locker for winning best picture!
ok, i used to like vera wang, now i positively adore her. she was in last night’s idol studio audience. she happened to outfit michelle delamor for that episode.
in a white top that looks like a miniature version of vera’s opulent wedding gowns, cropped motorcyle jacket, cutaway gloves, black tights and leather boots, michelle took on a biker bride ensemble and was obviously the night’s best dressed contestant. i wonder, will vera wang come out with a line of ready-to-wear like this? i sure hope so.
when jill posted an entry about restoring her mother’s wedding dress for her to wear on her own wedding day, i was reminded that, as a child, i wanted to wear a vintage gown on my special day too. of course, two decades later, that did not happen. my mother would have loved for me to wear her 1970′s gown (which i love; it looks like jenny’s wedding dress in forrest gump), but fitting into her former 23-inch waistline was an impossible feat. nevertheless, my fascination for vintage dresses has never waned one bit.
i am an avid ukay shopper. i thoroughly scour racks and bravely dig into crates for rare finds. i have been rewarded many many times for my patience and persistence, and i have to say i am quite proud of myself for being such a cheapskate sometimes. here in fiji, we are as big an ukay culture as the philippines, if not bigger. in all the second-hand outlets i’ve been to, there were evening dresses and prom gowns and formal wear on top of the usual casual and day wear, something i didn’t see quite often back home. two of these outlets even had wedding gowns. well now.
as the turn of events revived my fervent interest in vintage pieces and my ardent love for discovering beautiful pre-loved things burning as always, i went to my favorite vintage shop online, posh girl vintage, to look around and sigh at the dreamy wedding dresses. i may have exhausted my opportunity to wear these wonderful items, but there might be some of you out there who may like the dresses i found:
1950s organza tea length wedding dress
1950s designer wedding gown
1950s marilyn monroe halter dress
1960s empire flowy wedding dress
1950s white silk and lace tea length dress
1940s ivory beaded wedding dress
1950s white tea length wedding dress
1950s white strapless chiffon long gown
1950s tea length lace wedding dress
1950s perfect white tea length dress
1970s long hippie angel dress
and my favorite:
1950s pink and white princess gown
*sigh*
