would you wear a peplum dress like…

just like this time last year, i’ve been too disenchanted to write timely posts about red carpet events. therefore the critics choice awards, people’s choice awards and the golden globes have all come and gone without a trace in my inspiration reserve. i think it also didn’t help that i found the fashion a little underwhelming with a glimmer of hope from emma stone’s tux-inspired gucci ensemble and angelina jolie in atelier versace + brad pitt with a cane. someone tell me please who brad was wearing. angie’s dress is officially a candidate for my favorite dress of the year. as if my opinion matters. but that’s besides the point.
so i have decided to just write about the first thing that came to my mind as i was aimlessly looking at the red carpet arrivals: ladies are still wearing calvin klein with the following details:
is this the look of the decade?
this year, i think the best red carpet looks belong to two ladies. and they’re both named emma.
watching the wedding of prince william to kate, and anticipating prince albert of monaco’s to olympic swimmer charlene wittstock, reignited my interest to all things royal. i used to follow the very public lives of royal families as much as a schoolgirl could in the pre-internet era of magazine and newspaper clippings. i am by no means a monarchist (neither am i opposed to the form of government), but i harbor this unfettered fascination for modern day fairy tales as only royalty can realize. i suppose this is one of my guilty pleasures, my little indulgence, the keeping track of people born to a rich history of crowns and sceptres. or at least married into it, whatever.
so i am consequentially inspired to write about the styles of my favorite royal ladies. starting of course with the one whose fashion sense i admire the most, and possibly the closest i have to a girl crush, the current queen consort of jordan, rania al abdullah.
warning: this is a photo-overloaded entry. i am so in love with her style, i couldn’t suffer through selecting only a few of her best outfits. i gave up choosing after the third edit.
fiona “fi” glenanne (gabrielle anwar), the “trigger-happy ex-girlfriend” of lead character micheal westen (jeffrey donovan) in the successful spy series burn notice is savvy, sexy, cool, and there is a little war-mongerer in that tiny bikini body that makes her the boon of enemies. but what is there to fear in a munitions expert when it comes in this smoking package?
pvc tights, sometimes latex (call them liquid leggings if you want to sound less industrial), walked down the runways around this time three years ago and its leather counterpart followed very soon after (in fact, leather pants still made it to some of the current collections). the most purist of stylists claim the pvc tights are so over because leather leggings have taken their place, but for others who are less conscious of hot-off-the-runway pieces, the pvc/latex versions of these skin-tight pants are still in fashion. in fact, since it takes a while for designer pieces to get imitated into mass produced merchandise, i have just been seeing pvc and latex tights in some racks.
pvc (polyvinyl chloride, something i used to only know as the main material in pipes and other construction items) is extremely shiny, so shiny it has that permanent wet look to it. leather, on the other hand, is less glossy, but slick nonetheless, and both have that rock star, vampy vibe to them. it is one thing to slink and slither into the things and another to actually pull them off. and whether you wear the plastic or the animal hide, it seems you have to adhere to the same fundamental rules in wearing it.
for wimbledon this year, she was inspired by tina turner. you’d think she would look to other athletes for motivation, but she throws us a curveball and picks a celebrity from a completely different industry. hey, she is venus williams, she can and will wear anything she wants. because she can get away with it. and can definitely win with it.
sweet sixteen! both dakota and saoirse turned sixteen this year. and now that they have come of age, i would really love to pit one’s style against the other.
hayden panettiere – like
i’m wondering why she is all coiffed yet walking along a street with garbage in the background… nevertheless i am all for the neutral oversize shirt and dark skinny jeans (a combination that’s been trendy for the past how many years). i’m not a big fan of large sling bags for myself, but i like seeing them on other people, like this blue one on hayden. of course, the thong sandals and the aviator shades are staples.
after the glitz of the golden globes and the oscars, and the glamorous exaggerations of the grammys, i like that the nickelodeon kids’ choice awards comes next. no carpet-grazing designer gowns nor sparkling rocks that weigh a ton. just outfits more relaxed, hair and makeup less high-maintenance. after all, it is best to expect slime during the show, so better not show up in threads that get ruined in contact with green goo.
one thing we notice: no matter how less formal clothes can go on these occasions, heels always maintain their height. i love this trend! i love sky-high stilettos. i would wear them to a corn field if i could.
selena gomez. my favorite of the day, hands down! i think this one is downright pretty, from the loosely plaited hair, the sunny yellow chiffon dress and the metallic beaded belt. i must say i am pining for those shoes and that clutch, they are the best!
