royal style no. 1: queen rania of jordan
May 26th, 2011 by shallow

watching the wedding of prince william to kate, and anticipating prince albert of monaco’s to olympic swimmer charlene wittstock, reignited my interest to all things royal. i used to follow the very public lives of royal families as much as a schoolgirl could in the pre-internet era of magazine and newspaper clippings. i am by no means a monarchist (neither am i opposed to the form of government), but i harbor this unfettered fascination for modern day fairy tales as only royalty can realize. i suppose this is one of my guilty pleasures, my little indulgence, the keeping track of people born to a rich history of crowns and sceptres. or at least married into it, whatever.

so i am consequentially inspired to write about the styles of my favorite royal ladies. starting of course with the one whose fashion sense i admire the most, and possibly the closest i have to a girl crush, the current queen consort of jordan, rania al abdullah.

warning: this is a photo-overloaded entry. i am so in love with her style, i couldn’t suffer through selecting only a few of her best outfits. i gave up choosing after the third edit.

i smell, i remember: lacoste pour femme
May 8th, 2011 by shallow

what smells make you reminisce? my favorite hairdresser gets transported to his home in the province at the smell of damp earth. my husband, who was moved from country to country as a child following his father’s projects, says that the duty free department store smell: electronic toys mingled with fragrance testers brings him back to his childhood. mine is sunblock, specifically coppertone. and plastic pine trees, tinsel and gift wrappers.

i love smelling and remembering. memories jolted by olfactory stimuli seem sharper and more vivid to me than those involving sights or sounds. this, after all, has grounds in science.

therefore, it goes without saying that i am crazy about fragrances. and that a number of them are very close to me since they are invariably linked to certain memories. the most notable of these commercially available memory triggers is lacoste pour femme.

royal wedding best dressed
May 2nd, 2011 by shallow

victoria beckham

there might be some long sleeve nazis out there who scoff at this dress deeming it inappropriate for a wedding, but this to me is the best dress during an event deluded with overcoats and pompous hats. i believe also the best maternity look i’ve seen on any red carpet: the sleek ponytail, the minimal jewelry, david beckham….. it’s all so polished. and the superhuman powers required to walk in eight-inch heels with a bun in the oven. it’s incredible!

who stole the bride’s thunder?
May 1st, 2011 by shallow

everybody says it’s the younger middleton, pippa, the maid of honor, who did so in her slinky sarah burton for alexander mcqueen. while kate’s dress was definitely beautiful, it didn’t take my breath away. but pippa’s did with the lace trimming that peeped above the gentle cowl-neck and the cap sleeves, when we saw the silk-covered buttons slithering down her back and, well, the now famous backside on which they ended, how the dress contoured in all the right places, i knew right away that this is one of the most beautiful bridesmaid dresses i’ve ever seen.
