fiona “fi” glenanne (gabrielle anwar), the “trigger-happy ex-girlfriend” of lead character micheal westen (jeffrey donovan) in the successful spy series burn notice is savvy, sexy, cool, and there is a little war-mongerer in that tiny bikini body that makes her the boon of enemies. but what is there to fear in a munitions expert when it comes in this smoking package?

pvc tights, sometimes latex (call them liquid leggings if you want to sound less industrial), walked down the runways around this time three years ago and its leather counterpart followed very soon after (in fact, leather pants still made it to some of the current collections). the most purist of stylists claim the pvc tights are so over because leather leggings have taken their place, but for others who are less conscious of hot-off-the-runway pieces, the pvc/latex versions of these skin-tight pants are still in fashion. in fact, since it takes a while for designer pieces to get imitated into mass produced merchandise, i have just been seeing pvc and latex tights in some racks.
pvc (polyvinyl chloride, something i used to only know as the main material in pipes and other construction items) is extremely shiny, so shiny it has that permanent wet look to it. leather, on the other hand, is less glossy, but slick nonetheless, and both have that rock star, vampy vibe to them. it is one thing to slink and slither into the things and another to actually pull them off. and whether you wear the plastic or the animal hide, it seems you have to adhere to the same fundamental rules in wearing it.
as we reach mid-year, let’s take a look at some of the most popular styles in the hair front.
1. the quiff
seen on the runways of oscar de la renta, max mara and l.a.m.b. among others, the new quiff, an exaggerated height that challenges elvis presley’s hair to a battle of blow-outs, is the new updo. take it from the many celebs who have embraced this hairstyle. it has redefined our use of holding products.
for wimbledon this year, she was inspired by tina turner. you’d think she would look to other athletes for motivation, but she throws us a curveball and picks a celebrity from a completely different industry. hey, she is venus williams, she can and will wear anything she wants. because she can get away with it. and can definitely win with it.
early this year, there were knee-high socks. ironically, as the weather in most designer-influenced countries started to become colder, the socks went down to the ankles in catwalks all over fashion capitals.
ankle socks and mid-calf socks with heels aren’t exactly new (e.g., burberry prorsum ss09 and ss08), but it seems they occur more frequently this season.
you see them in ankle boots…

last year’s rumors are finally being realized!
if you are a music geek-cum-gamer who has made a personal career of emulating the king of pop’s singing and dancing, your self-taught skills can at long last be put to test this holiday season… when leading game developer ubisoft releases their michael jackson video game!
sweet sixteen! both dakota and saoirse turned sixteen this year. and now that they have come of age, i would really love to pit one’s style against the other.
coming back to fiji with a two-year-old can be quite a handful… literally. there’s food and drinks for the both of us. since she still bottle-feeds when she wants to go to sleep, i had to pack the bottles and milk too. we had to stay a night in hong kong, and because i didn’t want to unpack my check-in luggage anymore (it was a mission just to get it shut), i had to also carry night dresses and a change of clothes for us. that’s on top of a child’s usual change of clothes during travel. oh, and of course the coloring books and storybooks and crayons and the stuffed horse toy to keep her occupied for nearly eleven hours. forget my handbag; all my personals should just go into the same cabin luggage.
so even though i’ve never been a backpack person all my life, i decided to get one with compartments big and numerous enough to carry all my pre-schooler’s stuff. yet keep both my hands free as necessary when taking a two-year-old for a long haul trip.
