it seems the most common fashion deprivation complaint in the philippines has something to do with layering clothes. that is, the impracticality of it. with the climate, there is no sense in piling on coats and jackets and scarves unless you want to suddenly drop unconscious with heatstroke and dehydration in the middle of the street.
i myself am one of those who complain quietly about it, but i’m glad that this past year or two, ladies in the tropics are able to make up for the lack of clothing aggregation with a hollywood trend we can follow to our hearts’ desire: layering necklaces.

when we moved to fiji, one of the things i had to adjust to was how most people took haircut for granted. not to say that people took their hair in general for granted. in fact, many of them obsess over it: they dye, highlight, perm, fix into cornrows, braids, dreadlocks more frequently than i know pinays do. but haircut in particular doesn’t seem as big a deal as what i am more accustomed to.
so if i can’t find the time to experiment with different hair stylists, i decided, what the heck, might as well jump into the bandwagon. besides, this is the immediate solution to my hair’s volume problem. a good old fashioned perm. and i mean not digital.
ok, i am always rooting for the underdog. that’s the way i’m built, i like dark horses sailing past the thoroughbreds: there was kris allen last year whom i cheered for like a lunatic even though i was certain adam lambert would win. in the end, kris went on to take the prize and blew the betting odds.
this week, words like “rigged”, “upset” and “unexpected” are surfacing all over threads on idol news.
question: is it fair to say that this year lee pulled the rug from under crystal’s feet with another upset? can we even consider him the underdog?
of course, not. and here’s why:
warning: this post contains self-indulgent photos.
it is no secret that i am a stickler to habits. and that includes hair stylists (i wrote in a previous entry about my search for a hair stylist to whom i can remain loyal). i have been a very avid customer of basement salon since 2007, a few times in rockwell and a ton of other times in shangri-la.
my stylist of choice is cris in shang because he never lets me down. when i always thought my stick straight hair would never account for anything more than a droopy mass of sad, pathetic boredom, which lived years and years and years as a one-length plain heap of lifelessness that fell unhappily below my shoulders with renegade baby hair always escaping from unexpected places, he was able to provide structure and gave it natural body and volume. i was very hesitant to try layers and bangs for reasons stated in the same previous entry above, but i’m glad i trusted someone who obviously knew better.
no products, blow out or camera tricks in the “after” photos! just an expert haircut and air dry c/o our trusty electric fan!
before:
for winning the 10th mirror ball trophy in dancing with the stars!
fil-am nicole scherzinger with pro partner derek hough. further proof that pinays got that natural rhythm!
as i think about my impending flight back to fiji very soon, it occurs to me that i may have the wrong luggage.
first, my generic brand hardcase already weighs a great deal when empty, thus reducing the amount of items i can bring without exceeding weight limit. no, i refuse to pay excess baggage. when i came here, i only had a little over half the volume capacity of the case. in effect, i literally brought more pasalubong than personal items.
next, my carry-on is a sports duffel. it fits the required dimensions for the overhead bin, but i stuff more items in it than the maximum 7 kg. which i get away with most of the time if not all the time. it doesn’t have wheels nor does it strap onto my back, so i have to lug it by hand, by elbow or by shoulder, all 10+kg of it… aside from my mid-size purse that is itself brimming with trinkets and small personals. i normally don’t mind carrying stuff that heavy; if i don’t have to queue at checkpoints and transit lounges.
gone are the days when traveling meant humongous steamer trunks that weigh as much as furniture and gigantic wicker baskets for your food… modern technology has given us more options that promise less effort, less weight and less bulk.
fan art from a fantard (lifted from top idol):
i was hoping for a frau bait sing-off (lee vs. casey), but i have to admit crystal has some big talent. i still think lee has the mighty lead here, though we can never really predict how america votes. remember adam and kris last year? i loved kris because he was the cutest, but no one could have foreseen adam losing the plum. he was leading the pack so much that oddsmakers calculated a bet on adam as a losing one even if he wins; that is, they thought it was that obvious. but look at what happened!
i digress.
finals next week! go, lee ftw!
meet gertie hermanos, our petite designer friend with huge talent! proof that good things indeed come in small packages.
gertie with representatives from sassa and models wearing her designs.
gertie and i became friends in a fashion school where we both took a course in pattern-making. in the middle of our series of classes, she started working in a company that specializes in swimwear and active wear.
in no time, this brand, sassa, came out with some of the most attractive fashion for the beach: bikinis, tankinis, rash guards, board shorts in very exciting shapes and colors! this year, with their ever-growing repertoire of items for the active woman, they came out with a collection of sports and gym wear: tank tops, pullovers, capris, jazz pants and zip jackets, all with the trademark fresh and youthful vibe that has come to be known as sassa.
the health benefits of grapes and wine have been some of the best-known and, should we say best-loved facts of nutrition, but do you know that they also have beauty benefits when applied to skin?
in a january issue of a fashion magazine, i read that hollywood stars have now taken to pouring glasses of wine into their baths. it has been shown that grapes, the main ingredient in wine, when applied to skin, more especially if you soak in it, aids in blood circulation and promotes a youthful, healthy glow. the sediments, those fine solid particles that settle at the bottom of your glass, can be used to buff and polish your body which, together with its antioxidant properties, nourish the skin to keep it smooth and supple.
the review: movie week is a snoozefest but for the most die-hard of fans.
i haven’t seen the show yet (it is telecast here early evening), but i have read the real-time bloggers’ take on the episode and a fellow fantard’s opinions over ym.
